What are the two types of chimneys?
There are two types of chimneys. Those built from stone and mortar, bricks or blocks and prefabricated mental chimneys. What type you choose depends on preference and style. 

Do chimneys need pots?
A chimney pot helps prevent water from entering the chimney itself. If this were to happen, rust can begin to build on the fireplace dampers and the firebox back walls can begin to break down. This means repairs or replacements will be needed. Rainwater and damp can also lead to the brickwork deteriorating over time. 

Are all chimney pots a standard size?
Chimney pots come in different shapes and sizes, but the standard size for a fireplace that burns solid fuel is 200mm or 8 inches. 

Do chimney pots need covers?
A chimney pot cover, also known as a chimney cap or cowl is not essential but is very much recommended. It solves a number of problems, including feeling downdraughts throughout the fireplace and birds, debris or rain entering the chimney pot and falling down the flue.  

How much does it cost to replace a chimney?
The cost of replacing a chimney varies depending on whether you are installing a brand-new one or just repointing it. The style of the chimney and the roof size and health condition are also factors.
